This semester, 300 students are enrolled in a large lecture course called Social Media Writing (English 178), taught by Prof. Ainehi Edoro. Most of them (most of us) spend hours a day on these platforms without really stopping to think about how they work.
In the first part of the course, students read tech history, philosophy, literature, and cultural theory. The second half is building time. Students get into groups and spend seven weeks developing original Instagram accounts from the ground up.
The last two weeks, they move the digital worlds they have created on Instagram into a physical exhibition space.
The exhibition is titled SOCIAL MEDIA AS A WAY OF KNOWING. April 27, Room 7191, Helen C. White Hall. Gallery opens at 10am. Reception: 3–5pm, with refreshments.
Everyone is welcome.
